In 2012, 10GU’s first Newspaper Feature was a fact, kinda. Thanks to the street art collaboration that brought attention to Rotterdam’s multiculturalist character. The artwork in question was created by artist 6of7, showing the Dutch characters Jip and Janneke dressed as Muslims. This piece, created on the corner of Kruiskade and Tiendplein, raised some eyebrows but ultimately was allowed to stay as part of Rotterdam’s vibrant public discussion.
The piece was painted above a vacant store’s windows, with a scaffolding used to reach the area. But it wasn’t just about the art itself. It was a moment of pride to see my 10GU artwork, was part of the art shown in a newspaper. Even though not directly referenced in the text nor the focus of the photo, I didn’t care. My involvement in the project, alongside 6of7, Boem and OX-Alien from the Lastplak collective, was a milestone, as my work first appeared in a newspaper.
